Rachel completed her law degree and post-graduate diploma in legal practice at the Queensland University of Technology and was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in November 1992. She was admitted as a solicitor of the High Court of Australia in October 1993.

In February 1993, Rachel commenced employment with a large suburban firm north of Brisbane and her career in family law began. After three and a half years, during which she gained invaluable family law experience, Rachel took a job with a Brisbane CBD firm, running its family law department.

From there, Rachel moved to another Brisbane CBD firm to work as a senior associate to a leading Brisbane family lawyer, to deepen her family law experience.  It was whilst working at this firm that Rachel received her specialist accreditation in family law.

Rachel went on to work in a boutique family law practice in Brisbane before spending 14 years servicing family law clients in the western suburbs of Brisbane with an established and well regarded firm situated in Jindalee.

Rachel’s last position prior to commencing Cavanagh Gillies Lawyers was as the senior family lawyer for a national law firm, where she supervised and mentored the firm’s junior lawyers across the country.

During her career, Rachel has served as a committee member for the Family Law Practitioners Association of Queensland, the Queensland Law Society Family Law Accreditation Committee and the organising committee for the Law Council of Australia, Family Law Section Conference in Brisbane in 2004. She remains a member of the Queensland Law Society, the Family Law Practitioners Association of Queensland and the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia.

Rachel has appeared as an advocate in the Family and Federal Circuit Courts of Australia, the Magistrates and Children’s Courts of Queensland and the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal. She has also represented clients at numerous negotiations, mediations and dispute resolution conferences.

Having worked in the family law system since the early 1990’s, Rachel firmly believes that clients are best served by a solicitor who gives honest advice and is committed to finalising disputes as quickly, amicably and cost effectively as possible. Therefore, she endeavours to always provide her clients with clear, accurate advice in a forthright manner and encourages clients to adopt a pragmatic approach to resolving their family law matters. Having said that, she is acutely aware that there are certain cases where it is inappropriate or impossible to resolve a dispute out of court. In those cases, Rachel prepares her clients’ cases meticulously, to ensure the strongest, most persuasive information is put before the court in support of their case.

Her desire to establish a family law firm which is committed to providing expert advice, excellent client service and access to justice through flexible fee options, led to Rachel to partner with Mitchell Cavanagh, a Criminal Law Accredited Specialist, who shares the same values and vision for a client-centric legal practice.
